Mars Hill - Rich in Theatre History

Mars Hill, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina has deep roots in Appalachian history and the arts. It is the home of Bascom Lamar Lunsford, the “Minstrel of Appalachia” and honors his legacy with a festival every summer.

Owen Theater
Mars Hill College lies in the heart of Mars Hill. In addition to offering an outstanding theatre arts program, it is home to the Southern Appalachian Repatory Theatre (SART). Thousands of theatre-lovers are drawn to SART’s summer performances, presented by professional actors at the historic Owen Theatre located on the Mars Hill campus. The fullness of theatre and the arts is a year round happening in Mars Hill, whether it be equity actors or “soon-to-be” professionals.

First Stage was conceived through the SART Guild in 2001, with the vision of reaching out to the children of Mars Hill and throughout Madison County, giving them the opportunity to learn valuable life lessons through the theatre experience.
