SUMMER
STAGE 2011
First Stage Youth Theatre Celebrates 11 years of youth theatre in Madison County, North Carolina. Summer Stage 2011 will be the 11th year of Summer Fun, fantasy. Whether a clown, a mythical character, diva, First Stage Youth Theatre Campers explore their creativity in theatre, as actors, designers and playwrights.
Todd Weakley returns for the 7th year as Summer Camp Director. Todd is a professional theatre artist, Playwright and Director. Todd holds a Masters Degree in Theatre Education, currently working as theatre teacher at Hendersonville High. The first question from parents each summer; will Todd return this summer? The answer is yes! As usual, Todd has developed three weeks of theatre fun for students’ grades 3 - 12. Take a look!
The Creative Reaction
Ages 13-18
Imagine for a moment you on stage performing a play custom tailored to your strengths and interests. Imagine this play written for you and your friends by a professional playwright. It is “The Creative Reaction” of your ideas and thoughts merging with that of a bunch of other creative powerhouses. Can you imagine? Ideas, shared and implemented, you might say, “Imagination becomes a Reality”.
This summer you are a part of this intense immersion into the magical world of theatre. Day One, you will meet with the playwright and discuss ideas and themes. From there, we begin ensemble-building games, and the playwright starts writing. By the afternoon, we are neck deep in the art of acting, and the playwright is finished with the opening scenes of our play. Day two, we start rehearsing the new pages of dialogue, which come to us from your ideas through the creative writing of our resident playwright. Day three, more pages accumulate into a complete play, and rehearsals continue. Day four and five: more challenging and exciting rehearsals. We assemble props and costumes. Day six ‘the creative reaction” is complete, from Page to Stage. We share our “theatre creation” in a public performance. If you love acting, join us and test your imagination. If you love creating, join us and see your ideas explode into art. If you love fun, join us just because ….. Drama camp is fun!
The Bakeoff
Ages 8-12
If you want to bake a delicious cake, you have to follow a recipe. First, you assemble all the ingredients. Then you mix them together. You put the mixture in the oven, and finally, a few minutes later, delicious! Why am I talking about baking? Because…First Stage Youth Theatre is mixing up a delectable summer camp and we’re calling it “The Bakeoff”! Here’s the recipe. Day one you arrive and meet your friends, former friends and the new friends you’re about to meet. We start with fun.We play a bunch of games to break the ice and get ready to “Bake”. From there, we sit down with a professional playwright and select ingredients for a play. By day two, things are humming along. we are becoming amazing actors, and the playwright introduces a taste of the script. Day three and four, the fun continues, and the play is complete. We will rehearse, connect to each other through theatre games all the while learning how theatre is created, perfected and performed. Our bakeoff is now complete; our creation is now a play. Day six we perform our custom designed play giving the audience a delightful taste of youth theatre.
